The Way It Happens by James Babbs

The Way It Happens

the hum of the refrigerator
coming from the laundry room
reminds me
I don’t have any beer
but there’s whisky in the kitchen
siting right there on the counter
next to the stove
and
I know it won’t be much longer
before I’m opening the bottle
and
pouring whiskey into my coffee
because
I like the way it happens
once I begin drinking
when the heat rises up
and
I can feel it
washing over me
when I feel it
lifting
some of the weight
I’ve been carrying around with me
and
I know it won’t last
I know
it’s only going to be
for a few hours
but sometimes
that’s all a person needs
to keep themselves going
for a few more days

James Babbs has been writing for most of his life but he still manages to learn new things.  He has written hundreds of poems and a few short stories and has even had a few of them published.  More recently James has been indulging in writing haiku with a certain amount of success.  He still thinks about writing a novel someday but that just seems like an awful lot of words.
