Food Insecurity is a Bitch by Mercedes Lawry

Food Insecurity is a Bitch

It’s Friday with both clouds
and no clouds, i.e. blue sky
in constant motion. Last night
the wind blew sideways, as did rain-shafts.
Everyone was cold. I handed out
lettuce, apples, plums, lemons
and more, rolling in and out with the raucous gusts.

Last night I wanted to give everyone
warm coats, although the children didn’t seem to mind,
running and laughing and splashing,
rescuing a bit of our souls. Today
is calm, but I haven’t forgotten hunger.
I haven’t forgotten my unruly rage.
