Jack Kerouac never chewed away the January Blues by Melanie Browne

Jack Kerouac never chewed away the January Blues

Eating grape
flavored pez candy
a few days after Christmas
my daughters cat
is sleeping

on the puzzle table
Have some pez
I say to my husband

no thanks,
it tastes like grape
pepto- bismol

I toss the cat
and stare at the puzzle
which starts to morph
into an abyss

When I stare down into it
I see a lot of wrapping paper
amazon cardboard boxes
and some expired cheese

I also
see some people
arguing about
the Stranger Things Finale

I wave at them
they wave back

but as I wave
I drop my pez
Dispenser

It falls and falls
forever

Dammit to hell!
I scream into the echo
