The Last Thing by James Babbs

The Last Thing

tonight
here I am again
sitting under the ground
getting drunk on
sweet tea and bourbon
while listening to
a Van Halen record
one of the earlier ones
with lead singer David Lee
and
the music still sounds good
after all of these years
and
I’m sitting here
trying not to think
too much about love
because
when you’re alone
the last thing you want
to think about is love
so I take another drink
and
watch a large spider
crawling slowly up the wall
but before the spider
can reach the ceiling
I get up from where I’m sitting
and
I catch the spider
inside a piece of paper towel
and
squeeze it between my fingers
hearing the pop its body makes
before throwing it all
away in the trash

James Babbs has been writing for most of his life but he still manages to learn new things.  He has written hundreds of poems and a few short stories and has even had a few of them published.  More recently James has been indulging in writing haiku with a certain amount of success.  He still thinks about writing a novel someday but that just seems like an awful lot of words.
