Human by Jonathan S Baker

Human

A mail carrier, age 45,
divorced, living in the midwest,
enjoys contemporary folk rock, has a dog,
smokes cigarettes, doesn’t drink,
susceptible to hypnotic suggestion,
full head of hair, blue eyes,
6 foot tall, a bit overweight,
kind of jumpy, preoccupied with the fear
that he is subconsciously driven
by deep seated racial bias,
likes to dance, reads poetry,
urinates in public sinks as an act rebellion,
drives an American car,
votes for the lesser of two evils,
no kids, girlfriend stays over
couple nights a week,
takes the standard deduction,
hasn’t prayed since he was a kid
dreams about mortality regularly,
nightmares where teeth fallout
or skin peels like paint
that sort of thing,
owns a handgun,
donates to charity,
tries their best

versus
the feather of a river crane.
