Educational Recruiter Blues I

by Dan Provost

Because it’s the sale of
                                     education.

That forces me to carry a knife in
my pocket and debate every day
whether to cut my wrist
                                     or try to change my
                                     small part of the world
                                     by refusing to be bought.

I will not tell lies anymore.
Trying to convince someone
that the product is one must purchase.

Something you cannot live without.

No more reading false scripts…hoping to find
your inner pain threshold so I can make my quota.

Too many people prostitute themselves
for the dollar, or the slap on the back from some
miser of a boss.

Who grins and thinks that playing the game is breaking
the consumers’ wallet.

Not any more—I rather live poor and sleep
on a city sidewalk.

Knowing that the soul is still something to cherish and
breeding the innocent into thousands dollars of debt
is not the lord’s sin

But a human tragedy.
