Poet Melanie Simms in an award winning poet who was born in Hartford, Connecticut on March 29, 1966, to George and Elinor Melvin. She hails from a literary family, and was inspired at an early age to write poetry and short stories. Her mother was a newspaper editor and concert pianist, and her Uncle, Patrick Sloyan a Pulitzer prize winning war journalist from Newsday.

Her first publications were at age of 11 in the York, Pa Dispatch where she published her first poem, The Pumpkin Patch, and her first short story "UFO Story" in late 1970's. She began publishing again seriously in 1998 under the tutelage of America poets David Swanger, and Gary Young of Santa Cruz, Ca where she resided for 22 years and has continued to published since then. Her poems have been published in over 160 newspapers, ezines and literary journals including; The Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the York Dispatch, The Daily Item, the Santa Cruz Sentinel, The Monterey News Herald and the Patriot News. She has also been featured in Zuzu's Petals, Peshekee River Review, Taj Mahal Review and the Susquehanna Life Magazine. Her poems have been shared on the air with such radio stations as WKOK, WVIA, and NPR and is currently under consideration with Garrison Keillor's radio show, A Prarie Home Companion.

Ms. Simms' awards include a Sophie Award for poetic excellence, a Vermont Writers Studio Scholarship, a Richard Savage Award (Bloomsburg University), Poet of the Week (Poetry SuperHighway) among others. She has served as Poet Laureate of Perry County, Pa and was nominated for a Puschart Prize. Melanie is listed in Marquis Who's Who of the World, and Cambridge Who's Who of Women in Publication.

She is the author of the poetry book, Waking the Muse.

Ms. Simms currently resides in Sunbury, PA and is completing her BA in the Creative Writing Dept. at Bloosmburg University. She has one son, Chris Simms age 22.
