Tom Janikowski (b. January 1968 in Cudahy, Wisconsin) is a Midwestern writer specializing in short stories, flash fiction and tales of the bizarre. He currently lives and writes in Rock Island, Illinois and can be found at "A Martini and a Pen", as well as at "the lost beat", where he collaborates with his cousin, the poet Denise Janikowski-Krewal.

[edit] Formative Years

After secondary school, Janikowski studied English and Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and eventually at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, where he studied fiction under author Larry Watson and poetry under William L.M.H. Clark. Graduating in 1994 with a philosophy degree, Janikowski's professional writing was limited to book reviews for GP Light, the English Language supplement to Gwiazda Polarna - the nation's largest Polish-language newspaper.

Janikowski continued his studies at the oldest degree-granting institution in the state of Wisconsin, earning a Master's Degree in 2002. Despite this setback, he is still able to write in complete sentences and in the past several years he has focused almost exclusively on short fiction. His debut novel The Crawford County Sketchbook is a collection of tales set in a fictional county somewhere in the deep south, and was published by Red Hen Press of Pasadena in 2015.

[edit] Influences and Style

Janikowski admits to being greatly influenced primarily by "Lost Generation" authors such as William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, although his style is more reflective of Jack Douglas on crystal meth. The imagery developed in the films of Quentin Tarantino also figures quite heavily in Janikowski's mind, if not in his work.

Mr. Janikowski maintains that you do not want to sell him deathsticks and that you would like to go home and rethink your life.
