Issue #52, Spring 2010 Cover

The Steelhead Special is a print cultural and literary review based in Humboldt County, California. The Steelie, founded in 1991, has always been free to readers and available at a variety of regional venues.[1] Editor and publisher Joe Shermis has made the current issue as well as back issues available online.

[edit] History and Background

The Steelhead Special was created in a meeting held in the late winter/early spring of 1991 in Manila, CA. The idea was to create a working class cultural and lierary review that would somehow create a stronger sense of community by showcasing the work of radical thinkers, poets, working people and intellectuals in a single print venue. Within weeks of announcing the upcoming launch of a new journal, the Steelie was flooded with manuscripts of all types.

The Steelhead Special is now published under the aegis of The Ink People Center for the Arts in Eureka, California. As a celebration of National Poetry Month in the United States on April 13, 2011 the center is sponsoring a benefit “intermedia spoken word performance” with international poet Nicholas Karavatos and local musicians Jeff Kelley & Shao Way Wu to support the continued publication of The Steelhead Special.[2]
