History and Background

Red Fez Publications debuted online on March 25, 2003. It was founded by author and independent publisher Leopold McGinnis in 2002.[2] Jennifer McCarthy and Sara Ruffolo came on as editors in Winter 2006. In Spring 2007, Red Fez went through a substantial re-design, titled Red Fez 2.0. Michele McDannold joined the Red Fez editorial team in 2007 and eventually became Editor-in-Chief.

The publishing schedule at Red Fez was irregular at first but eventually found its way to quarterly issues.[3] This continued for several years until on January 1, 2011 it was announced that Red Fez would begin publishing issues on a monthly basis. New issues are released on the 13th of every month.[4]

Content

Red Fez Publications was founded in 2002 by author Leopold McGinnis (with the vital support of his writing group: David McGinnis, Joan Hoekstra, Rita Simpson & Louisa Sunstrum) out of youthful optimism and a desire to break literature out of the wrinkly, old, death-grippy, status-quo-like hands of a tired and insular literary industry.[5] The focus was initially on fiction but quickly turned to poetry as the bulk of submissions would demand. Over time it has grown to include art, comics, non-fiction, audio and video.

Books

Red Fez released its first online chapbook on December 1, 2010. Vulcan Gang Sign by Bradley Mason Hamlin is a 24 page chapbook consisting of 11 Bradley Mason Hamlin poems, including “Santa Monica Blues,” which recalls Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s early days as a rent collecting bodybuilder.[6]

In conjunction with Lit Vision Press, Red Fez Publications released a limited print edition of Red Reader #1 in August 2011. A collection of stories, poems and art, Red Reader #1 was the first print publication from Red Fez.[7]

Columns

Red Fez included its first regular column in Issue #28 (September 1, 2010). The "Observations of a Dumb Polack" column by Karl Koweski debuted in Issue #63 (April 2006) of Zygote in my Coffee and ran there as a regular feature until its final issue in April 2010.[8]

The next column to be added to the Red Fez lineup was "Dispatches from Atlantis" by Paul Corman-Roberts. It first appeared in Issue #29 (December 1, 2010).[9]

"The Last Days of Los Angeles", a column by Luis Rivas debuted in Issue #37 (August 13, 2011).

Audio/Video

The 28th issue of Red Fez, released on September 1, 2010, featured the addition of audio pieces by Tim Murray and the Corporate Cobras. Expanding the video section is a short video by Cecelia Chapman made in collaboration with Jeff Crouch.
