Candle
Joseph
Veronneau
We stole them
from the downtown store,
sometimes from the church alter
and smoke until
oblivion reached out and touched
while the ceiling flickered us--
rendez-vous with our demonics.
Walking home between
snow-blown paths
while others sought out
heated dormitories,
hands deep into my black coat
looking away from passers.
They got home
and reached venereal conclusions
to their evenings,
penicillin burning through mistakes,
the strong wind whistled through windows,
souls warning them too late.
When the power went out
later that month,
many preferred darkness
over the candlelight.
